COMMUNICATION ETHICS AND PRACTICAL REASONING
California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is a comprehensive public university committed to serving the diverse people of California, especially the working class, historically under-served, and low-income populations. CSUMB’s Division of Humanities and Communication is seeking candidates uniquely qualified to prepare working-class, ethnically diverse, and historically under-served students for leadership in a multicultural society.
Position starting date: Fall, 2015.
Responsibilities: Teach innovative lower and upper division courses in communication ethics, dialogue and deliberation, philosophical analysis, applied ethics, cooperative argumentation, and related coursework; Sustain innovative scholarly research, publication, and professional service. Apply new scholarship and pedagogies to teaching. Serve on Department, Division, College, and University-wide committees. Provide support for one or more departmental programs, and contribute to reciprocal community partnerships.
Minimum Qualifications: Earned doctorate in Philosophy, Communication Studies, Rhetoric, Religious Studies, or Allied Discipline. Ability to provide leadership in Practical and Professional Ethics. Ability to teach courses in communication ethics, applied ethics, and deliberation. Ability to assist with innovative interdisciplinary program development. Ability to teach and mentor students from nontraditional, working class, and diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds.
Desirable Qualifications: Ability or potential in one or more of the following areas:
- Interdisciplinary teaching in Leadership Studies, Religious Studies, Theology, or Spirituality Studies.
- Application of new media technologies in teaching.
- Innovative teaching and assessment models.
- Furthering relationships with the diverse communities of the Monterey Bay and tri-county region;
- Proficiency in a second language.
- Service learning pedagogy.

2014 Communication Ethics Division Call for Awards
Nominations are now open:
The Communication Ethics Division invites nominations for awards to be presented at the 2014 Division Business Meeting at the 100th Annual Convention of NCA in Chicago. We will recognize academic excellence in publications with a strong communication ethics focus in a single authored book of the year, edited book of the year, and journal article of the year. Publication must have occurred between August 2013 and July 2014 to be considered for the 2014 awards. In addition, we will present a top communication ethics teaching award to recognize achievement in pedagogy specifically related to teaching communication ethics.
To make a nomination, including self-nominations, submit a cover letter outlining the merits and impact of the nominated work or teacher by October 10, 2014. For the teaching award, also include evidence of teaching effectiveness based on student evaluation scores and comments, as well as peer review(s) and a candidate statement of teaching philosophy. For book nominations, please send three copies to: Melissa Cook, Saint Vincent College, Prep Hall, 300 Fraser Purchase Rd, Latrobe, PA 15650. For journal articles, please submit a PDF file to Melissa.Cook@stvincent.edu. If a PDF copy is not available, send three paper copies to the address above. The Communication Ethics Interest Group of the National Communication Association invites nominations now for awards that will be presented at our 2012 division business meeting at the NCA Convention in Orlando. We will recognize academic excellence in publications with a strong communication ethics focus in: single author book of the year, edited book of the year, and journal article of the year. Award winners are encouraged but not required to be division members. Publication must have occurred between August 2011 and July 2012 to be considered for the 2012 awards. In addition, we will present a top communication ethicsteaching award to recognize achievement in pedagogy specifically related to teaching communication ethics.
