The Center for Digital Ethics and Policy at Loyola University Chicago is looking for pieces on digital ethics.  The length of the piece should be 1,000-2,000 words.  The material must be original, not published in other forms or in other forums.    We will pay $250 for a completed piece.  Pieces will be published on the center’s web site, digitalethics.org.

To begin send a short pitch; including the topic, a brief outline of main points, and sources you will use, include also a paragraph on your background and experience.  We will review the proposal and proceed from there.

Awards Call

Filed under: Calls for Papers & Nominations by: Pat Gehrke

The Communication Ethics Division of the National Communication Association invites nominations now for awards that will be presented at our 2011 division business meeting at the NCA Convention in New Orleans. We will recognize academic excellence in publications with a strong communication ethics focus in: single author book of the year, edited book of the year, and journal article of the year. Award winners are encouraged but not required to be division members. Publication must have occurred between August 2010 and July 2011 to be considered for the 2011 awards. In addition, we will present a top communication ethics teaching award to recognize achievement in pedagogy.

To make a nomination, including self-nominations, submit a cover letter outlining the merits and impact of the nominated work or teacher. For the teaching award, include evidence of teaching effectiveness as based on student evaluation scores and comments, as well as peer review(s) and a candidate statement of teaching philosophy.

For book nominations, please send two copies to: Spoma Jovanovic, Department of Communication Studies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 108 Ferguson Building, P.O. Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170.

For journal articles, please submit a PDF file copy to spomajovanovic@uncg.edu. If a PDF copy is not available, send three paper copies to the address above.

For teaching awards, please submit three complete packets of requested materials to spomajovanovic@uncg.edu.

SSCA Ethics & Philosophy of Communication Group Approved

Filed under: Announcements by: Pat Gehrke

Just a few weeks ago the Southern States Communication Association officially approved the establishment of a new interest group in Ethics & Philosophy of Communication.  Tom Socha notified me today that we received unanimous support from the executive board at their meeting during the NCA convention in San Francisco.

We owe our first steps toward success to the diligent and persistent work of James Pickett at Flagler College on the bylaws, petitions, and essentially all the details that are required for official status. This interest group originated out of his energies, from the very beginning.

We still have to wait for official word on our panel and business meeting in the SSCA schedule for Little Rock, but once the details are announced I will pass them along.

Call for Chapter Proposals — “Contemporary Media Ethics”, Koji Fuse

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS: Deadline extended to Dec. 31, 2010. Contemporary Media Ethics: A Practical Guide for Students, Scholars and Professionals in the Globalized World (2nd ed.), edited by Mitchell Land, Koji Fuse and Bill W. Hornaday

We seek chapter proposals (the maximum of 1,000 words with endnotes) for the second edition of Contemporary Media Ethics, which will be published by Marquette Books. This is a major revision. All chapters solicited are case analyses that compare utilitarian and non-utilitarian approaches to decision making in mass media practices. The non-utilitarian approach can be either non-Western or non-dominant Western. In particular, cross-cultural proposals that attempt to apply a non-Western philosophical foundation (e.g., the palaver, Confucianism, Daoism, Islam) to a U.S. domestic case are welcome. Proposals are due Dec. 31, 2010, and chapters due June 30, 2011. To learn complete details and requirements, please read through the project website very carefully at http://fuseprojects.weebly.com/mediaethics.html. Should you have questions, do not hesitate to e-mail Koji Fuse at kfuse@unt.edu.
