The Communication Ethics Interest Group of the National Communication Association invites nominations now for awards that will be presented at our 2012 division business meeting at the NCA Convention in Orlando.  We will recognize academic excellence in publications with a strong communication ethics focus in: single author book of the year, edited book of the year, and journal article of the year.  Award winners are encouraged but not required to be division members. Publication must have occurred between August 2011 and July 2012 to be considered for the 2012 awards. In addition, we will present a top communication ethicsteaching award to recognize achievement in pedagogy specifically related to teaching communication ethics.

To make a nomination, including self-nominations, submit a cover letter outlining the merits and impact of the nominated work or teacher.  For the teaching award, include evidence of teaching effectiveness as based on student evaluation scores and comments, as well as peer review(s) and a candidate statement of teaching philosophy.

We owe our first steps toward success to the diligent and persistent work of James Pickett at Flagler College on the bylaws, petitions, and essentially all the details that are required for official status. This interest group originated out of his energies, from the very beginning.

We still have to wait for official word on our panel and business meeting in the SSCA schedule for Little Rock, but once the details are announced I will pass them along.

We seek chapter proposals (the maximum of 1,000 words with endnotes) for the second edition of Contemporary Media Ethics, which will be published by Marquette Books. This is a major revision. All chapters solicited are case analyses that compare utilitarian and non-utilitarian approaches to decision making in mass media practices. The non-utilitarian approach can be either non-Western or non-dominant Western. In particular, cross-cultural proposals that attempt to apply a non-Western philosophical foundation (e.g., the palaver, Confucianism, Daoism, Islam) to a U.S. domestic case are welcome. Proposals are due Dec. 31, 2010, and chapters due June 30, 2011.
